MODENA PENTHOUSE

Located in the East of Singapore, this 258sqm penthouse was reimagined through a series of extensive spatial interventions that transformed the once compartmentalised home into an open, light-filled environment centred around gathering and everyday living.

A significant portion of the lower floor was hacked away to open up the living spaces, allowing the new dry kitchen to become the heart of the home. Anchored by a 3-metre-long island, the space now functions as both a social hub and an extension of daily rituals, inviting family and guests to gather with ease.

One of the most transformative moves involved removing the long wall that once separated the kitchen, entry, and living areas. This intervention not only visually expanded the home but also introduced natural cross ventilation between the balcony and air well, creating a breezier and more connected living environment. The air well floor was subsequently elevated to align seamlessly with the new dry kitchen level, reinforcing continuity throughout the space.

Behind a newly introduced wall feature sits a row of once-dated full-height windows, now reinterpreted through two circular openings that frame curated outward views while balancing privacy with connection. Existing structural constraints were also carefully reconsidered; the retained central column was wrapped in mirrors to visually dissolve its presence while amplifying light throughout the home.

Across the interior, spaces are designed to support the rituals of everyday life. From the entrance foyer to the kitchen island and drinks station, each zone is unified through a careful balance of materiality, functionality, and flow. Concealed moments of surprise are woven into the home, including a sliding door disguised as a magazine shelf that reveals a hidden powder room beyond.

Within the kitchen and yard, thoughtful detailing maximises functionality within a compact footprint. The homeowners curated a series of practical fittings, including a drop-down sauce rack concealed within the upper corner cabinetry to optimise storage. Other integrated details; from dual laundry chutes and a concealed ironing board to a dedicated niche for the robot vacuum, quietly enhance the experience of daily living without compromising the calmness of the space.
